Data Sources & Methodology

Primary Data Source: US Census Bureau

All demographic data on ZipCodeDex comes from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates, published annually by the US Census Bureau.

What is the ACS?

The American Community Survey is an ongoing survey that provides vital information about the nation's people and housing. The 5-year estimates combine data collected over a 60-month period, providing the most reliable estimates for all geographic areas.

The cost of living index is calculated using a weighted formula based on median home value (60% weight) and median rent (40% weight) relative to national medians. A score of 100 represents the national average.

Data Limitations

  • ACS estimates have margins of error, especially for smaller populations
  • Some data may be suppressed by the Census Bureau for privacy reasons
